Nele Pede, born in Belgium in 1968, lived the first part of her life with her grandmother. She was the inspiration for Terremoto’s creativity (the brand she created for her personalized bags). Her grandmother, a seamstress with a poetic sense of folk life, inspired Nele to make bags, bags that are a feast for the senses and a representation of the person who wears them. After completing her illustration studies at the San Lucas School of Art in Ghent, she moved to New York in search of new adventures and other ways to expand her creativity. New York became her introduction to adult life; contact with a diversity of cultures changed her view of the world forever. Being an immigrant helped her see her origins from other perspectives and observe the city with a distance soaked in intimacy. Making personal bags turned out to be a good way to contemplate the city and its inhabitants. Later, following love, she arrived in Mexico, where she began working with the Native Indians. Nele designed fabrics that were changed in strange and surprising ways by the interpretation of the Mayan women. Her voyages to foreign countries and distant cultures made her reflect on her own country and her place in this world… Her first daughter was born in Chiapas, Mexico. A beautiful memory that she took with her to the city of Barcelona. And, shortly after, to the farmhouse surrounded by vineyards where she has found a place to go back to her roots, making illustrations. For years, she has been a mother 90% of her time, while the remaining 10% she dedicated completely to experimenting with different materials and mixing her experiences, to connect the past with the present and discover a future of colours.
